Smart Home Devices in Ghana: An Easy Starter Guide

"Smart home" sounds like something only for big new houses in East Legon or Lekki, with an installer and a big bill. It isn't. Today you can start with one small gadget, set it up with your phone in a few minutes, and add more when you're ready.
What makes a device "smart"?
A smart device connects to your home WiFi and is controlled from an app on your phone. Once it's connected, you can switch it on or off from anywhere you have internet, set timers so it runs on a schedule, and in many cases control it with your voice through Alexa or Google Assistant.
The big benefit is simple: less running around, more control.
What you need before you buy
Before you order any smart gadget, check these four things:
- A steady WiFi connection at home. Most smart devices need WiFi to work from the app. A home router or a MiFi that stays on is enough for a few devices.
- A 2.4GHz WiFi network. Many smart plugs and switches only connect on 2.4GHz, not 5GHz. Most home routers offer both, so check your router settings or ask whoever set it up.
- A smartphone with the right app. Each product page tells you which app or system it works with, such as Tuya or Smart Life. Install the app before your gadget arrives so setup is quick.
- Realistic expectations during light-off. If the power or the internet goes off, devices that depend on them stop responding until they come back. Smart gadgets make life easier, but they don't replace a backup light or fan.
Smart plugs: the easiest place to start
A smart plug sits between your wall socket and an appliance. Plug the appliance into it, connect the plug to the app, and you can switch that appliance on or off from your phone or set it on a timer.
Popular uses at home:
- Switching off a water heater or iron you forgot
- Putting a fan, decorative lights or a TV on a schedule
Our 16A WiFi Smart Plug with Energy Monitor is rated for 16A, works on 2.4GHz WiFi, has a timer function and supports voice control with Alexa and Google Assistant. The power monitor function is useful if you want to see which appliances are adding to your prepaid bill.
Smart switches: control what's already wired in
A smart switch does a similar job to a smart plug, but it's fitted into the wiring of a light or appliance rather than plugged into a socket. That makes it handy for ceiling lights, outside security lights or a borehole pump that you don't plug in and out.
The 16A WiFi Smart Switch (Tuya / Smart Life) works with the Tuya and Smart Life apps, supports Alexa and Google Home voice control and supports two-way control. It's a mini size of 40x40x21mm, so it fits behind many switch plates.
Important: a smart switch is wired into your electrics. Have a qualified electrician fit it, and never work on live wires yourself.
WiFi security cameras: keep an eye on home or shop
A WiFi camera lets you watch your home, shop, gate or baby's room live from your phone. It's one of the most searched smart gadgets in Ghana right now, especially by shop owners and people who travel often.
What to look at when choosing one:
- Picture quality. 1080P (Full-HD) is clear enough to recognise faces and number plates at a normal distance.
- Coverage. A rotating camera can cover a whole room or yard instead of one fixed angle.
- Where it will go. Check that the camera is rated for outdoor use if it will face rain and dust.
- Easy setup. Bluetooth or hotspot setup saves you a lot of trial and error.
The Mini 1080P WiFi Security Camera, Auto-Tracking records in 1080P, rotates 360°, is made for indoor and outdoor use, is waterproof and weatherproof, and supports Bluetooth one-click network setup and AP hotspot mode.
Robot vacuums: cleaning while you're out
Dust is a daily fight in Ghana, especially in harmattan. A robot vacuum cleans your floors on its own, then goes back to its dock to charge.
The Lenovo 3-in-1 Intelligent Robot Vacuum Cleaner sweeps, mops and recharges itself. It has 6000Pa suction, LDS laser navigation to map the room, and is designed to pick up pet hair without tangling. You can choose cleaning modes from the app or the remote.
Item trackers: never lose your keys again
A small tracker clips onto your keys, bag or luggage and shows you how close you are to it on your phone. It's great for the person who's always searching for the car key before leaving the house.
The Item Tracker for Android (Google Find My) works with Android 9 or higher through the Google Find My Device app, shows real-time proximity and is end-to-end encrypted. Note that it's made for Android phones, so it's not the right pick if you use an iPhone.
Which device should you buy first?
- For saving power and peace of mind: start with a smart plug.
- For security at home or in your shop: go for a WiFi camera.
- For busy homes and pet owners: a robot vacuum saves the most time.
- For the forgetful one in the family: an item tracker makes a great small gift.
With Christmas coming, these gadgets also make thoughtful gifts for parents, new homeowners and the tech lover in your life.
